Creative Commons License Notice

A key part of our mission is to support students, teachers and parents. In 2019 and 2020, we published a number of our teaching and learning resources under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International Licence (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

Those resources remain available under that licence. We refer to these resources as our Legacy Creative Commons Collection

Please note, not everything that is free to use or download from this site is Creative Commons licensed. The licence applies only to resources that STP has expressly identified as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

WHAT THIS COVERS

This notice applies to STP resources that we expressly published under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

If a resource is marked as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, the licence applies to that resource.

If the resource is hosted on, or linked from, a webpage, the licence does not automatically extend to the surrounding webpage.

A newer edition or replacement resource is not automatically Creative Commons licensed simply because an earlier edition was. Any rights already granted in the earlier CC-licensed material remain unaffected.

WHAT THIS DOES NOT COVER

Unless we expressly identify something as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, you should not assume that the licence applies to it.

In particular, the licence does not apply to:

  • our current resources unless they are expressly marked CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, even if they are free to download or use;
  • our books, in print or as ebooks, including sample or preview pages from them;
  • the surrounding text, explanations, examples, tables, photographs, design, and code of this website;
  • our book covers, artwork, and illustrations outside a resource expressly published under the licence;
  • the Swot Tots Publishing and STP Books names and logos.

Some resources may contain third-party artwork, clipart, photographs, fonts or other licensed material. Copyright and other rights in that material remain with the relevant rights holder unless expressly stated otherwise. CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 grants only rights that STP has authority to license; it does not give you a separate right to extract or reuse third-party material beyond the rights that apply to it.

If you are not sure whether something is covered, please ask us.

WHAT YOU MAY DO WITH OUR CREATIVE COMMONS RESOURCES

Subject to the terms of CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, you may:

  • download and print them;
  • make as many copies as you need;
  • use them at home, in a classroom, in a library, in a tutoring session, or in another teaching or learning setting;
  • share them with other people;
  • adapt, change, or translate them;
  • build something new from them.

You do not need to ask us first, and there is nothing to pay.

The licence applies worldwide and lasts for as long as the relevant copyright and similar rights last, provided its terms are followed.

CREDIT US

If you share one of our Creative Commons resources, or share something you have made from it, please credit STP.

A suitable credit would be:

Only include “Adapted from the original” if you actually changed the resource.

The exact form of the credit can vary depending on where and how you are sharing the material. The important things are to identify the resource and its creator, identify the licence, give the source where reasonably practical, and say if you changed the original.

If the resource already carries its copyright and licence information, leaving that information in place is usually the simplest way to do this. If you need to move or reformat the credit when adapting a resource, you may do so, provided the required attribution remains clear.

NON-COMMERCIAL USE

CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 permits use of the licensed material for NonCommercial purposes.

That does not simply mean that you must not sell the PDF. Under the licence, the question is whether the use is primarily intended for commercial advantage or monetary compensation.

We also give the following additional permission for our resources:

Teachers, tutors, childminders, and other educators may use our Creative Commons resources as part of their ordinary teaching, including where they are paid for their time or where the school, tutoring service, or other educational setting charges fees.

That additional permission does not allow you to sell the resource itself, charge separately for access to it, turn it into a paid download, or bundle it into a product that you sell.

If you would like to use one of our Creative Commons resources commercially in some other way, please ask us.

IF YOU ADAPT A RESOURCE: SHAREALIKE

You may change, adapt, or translate one of our Creative Commons resources.

If you then share your adapted version, the ShareAlike condition applies.

For most people, the simplest option is to publish the adapted version under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 as well.

The full licence also permits certain later or compatible licences with the same licence elements. If you want to use one of those alternatives, please check the full Creative Commons licence terms.

You must also say that you changed the original and give the attribution described above.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND TEXT AND DATA MINING

The Creative Commons licence does not contain a blanket prohibition on artificial-intelligence training or text and data mining.

Where copyright permission is required to use one of our Creative Commons resources for AI training or text and data mining, anyone relying on CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 must comply with the licence, including its NonCommercial restriction.

We do not grant any additional permission through this notice for commercial AI training or commercial text and data mining.

This notice does not restrict anything that copyright law allows someone to do without our permission.

Nothing in this section gives any AI or text-and-data-mining rights over STP material that is not published under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

THE FULL LICENCE

This page explains our Creative Commons arrangements in ordinary English. It does not replace or alter the Creative Commons licence itself.

You can read the full Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International Licence and its legal code on the Creative Commons website.

If anything in our explanation appears to conflict with the licence itself, the licence governs.

The additional permission for ordinary paid teaching given above is permission from Swot Tots Publishing Ltd in addition to the rights provided by the Creative Commons licence.
