This printable PDF uses 10 bite-size, multiple-choice questions to assess children's knowledge of 10 key areas of spelling.
While the KS1 SATs Spelling paper does not use the multiple-choice question format, we have used it here to make it easier for both you and your child to benefit from this resource, as you do not have to read the sentences aloud. Full answers are supplied.
The resource includes two printing options for the tests: colour-accented or ink-friendly greyscale.
A free online, self-marking version of this test is also available here. Your child can complete the test in this browser. No login is needed.

WHAT ARE THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES OF THIS RESOURCE?
With this bite-size resource, children focus on practising what they have learnt about spelling rules and patterns in a quick, manageable format.
The resource also builds children's ability to work through a set number of questions in a limited timeframe.
By doing a 10-minute test such as this, children become much more confident with timed exercises and tests, making such assessments far less daunting.
IS THIS AN EVERGREEN OR SEASONAL RESOURCE?
This resource is obviously designed with the KS2 SATs in mind, and as such, will be useful for revision in the spring during the run-up to the exams. That said, you may also find this useful for quick, targeted practice before a mock exam at school or other forms of assessment.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO DO THIS IN 10 MINUTES?
No, your child does not have to complete this test in 10 minutes.
While you may find it useful as a tool for your child to practice answering questions against the clock or that your child enjoys the challenge of doing a quick-fire set of questions, you may equally decide that your child will benefit from the resource more if the time pressure is removed.
The amount of time your child spends doing it is left entirely up to you.
DOES THIS RESOURCE INCLUDE ANSWERS?
Yes, this resource includes a list of quick answers at the back.
DOES THIS RESOURCE INCLUDE MARKING GUIDELINES?
No, it doesn't. All the questions have only one correct answer, and none of them involve any ambiguity.
Each correct answer is worth 1 mark.
IS THIS TEST SUITABLE FOR KS2 SATS PREPARATION?
Yes, it is. The question formats used in the test are modelled on questions used in actual SATs exams, and the content of the questions themselves supports the National Curriculum.
