This printable PDF provides children with targeted word-sorting practice. Children are given 36 adjectives to sort into three groups: adjectives that can describe motion, appearance, or sound.
The resource includes two differentiated versions: Version 1 suggests a strategy to help students progress; for a greater challenge, Version 2 provides the core task only. The resource contains suggested answers and marking guidelines.

DIFFERENTIATION
What is a Differentiated Resource?
A differentiated resource is one that provides the same exercise in two distinct versions. Each version has its own format and separate instructions.
Why Differentiate?
The material is differentiated to accommodate children and students with a range of abilities and strengths. The differentiation also means that the exercise can be used more than once - with Version 2 providing an extra (or subsequent) challenge.
How is this Resource Differentiated?
Version 1 provides children and students with guided practice. They are given the precise number of target words that can be placed in each group of word clusters along with a suggested elimination strategy to help children and students progress through the activity.
Version 2 gives children and students the opportunity to practise independently. They are told which word clusters the target words can be divided into, but not how many words can be placed in each category.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES
These exercises help establish how well children and students know the meanings of a predefined set of adjectives ending with ‘-ing’. The exercises also help show how aware children and students are of the word clusters that these predefined adjectives belong to.
Focusing on this predetermined set of adjectives helps reinforce the meanings and antonyms that the children and students already know while also potentially helping to extend their knowledge to include unfamiliar words.
SEASONALITY
You will most likely employ this resource in the autumn during the run-up to Halloween. However, you can use it at any point in the year - especially if your children or students are looking at materials that are connected to the supernatural. It may be particularly useful to children and students when they are engaged in creative writing projects.
